The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 47-year old house wife, Joy Egeonu, for allegedly beaten her husband’s 11-year old niece to death over the sum of N6,500.
A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP. Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated that the deceased, identified as Chibuike Egeonu was accused of stealing his sister in-law’s money.
Oyeyemi added that the suspect was promptly arrested following a report by the deceased’s mother, Ijeoma Egeonu, who reported the incident at the Agbado Police Divisional headquarters.
As at the time of the incident, the deceased was said to be living with her elder brother and his wife at Opeilu, Agbado Area of the state.
The police stated further that after the incident, which happened last Sunday, the suspect took the corpse of the boy to Ifo where she hurriedly buried him.
”On the strength of the report, the DPO Agbado Division, CSP Omonijo Olatunji, led his detectives to the scene where the woman was promptly arrested”.
”On interrogation, the suspect claimed to have suspected the boy as the person who stole her money which prompted her to flog the boy to the point of coma” the PPRO stated in the statement.
Oyeyemi quoted Mrs. Egeonu as stating further that the boy gave up the ghost while she was taking him to the hospital.
Egeonu, who was said to have regretted her action, lamented that she later discovered that the missing money was taken by her husband and not the deceased.
