Scores of All Progressives Congress (APC) women, from the three senatorial districts of Ogun State, have threatened to occupy the Federal, Capital Territory, naked if the National Working Committee and the national Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomole failed to announce Hon. Abdul-Kabir Adekunle Akinlade, as the substantive governorship candidate of the party.
The APC NWC had announced Prince Dapo Abiodun as the winner of its governorship primary conducted few weeks ago in the state, as against Hon. Akinlade, who is the preferred candidate of Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
The women also took to major streets of Abeokuta, the state capital to protest what they termed “imposition of candidates in the All Progressives Congress in the state”.
Armed with placards with various inscriptions, the protesters also stormed the secretariat of Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta and accused the NWC of announcing an aspirant that is not popular as the party governorship candidate.
APC Women Leader, Shade Giwa, while addressing journalists, claimed the party voted for Akinlade during the primary election held on October 2 and he emerged as the winner, but lamented that the electoral committee announced Dapo Abiodun as the winner.
“The Electoral committee should be warned, Adams Oshiomole, should be warned, he should release our mandate, we give him till Friday to announce the result or else, by Saturday, we will meet him at Abuja.
“We want the whole Nigeria to know that we in Ogun State are of Ogun standard and we cannot take anything apart from that. In the party primary recently conducted in Ogun, we voted for Adekunle Akinlade, we don’t know Dapo.
“Adekunle is the one that all the APC women voted for and anything apart from Akinlade is a no to us. We are warning all the NWC led by Adams Oshiomole because women are going to take action if they fail to announce Akinlade as the party candidate before Friday. We are going to storm Abuja to express our displeasure and we will go naked”, Giwa stated.
The deputy governor, Yetunde Onanuga, while addressing the protesters at the Governor’s Office, Oke-mosan, said she was ready to follow them to Abuja
Meanwhile, a legal counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yemi Oke, has declared that only list of candidates presented by the Sikirulai Ogundele-led executive committee of the party in the state will be accepted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He spoke against the backdrops of controversy surrounding the submission of list of candidates to INEC, between the Senator Buruji Kashamu-backed Bayo Dayo-led exco and that of Ogundele.
Oke, said the national headquarters of PDP, had approached the Supreme Court to revalidate its judgement in 2017, which recognized the Caretaker Committee of Senator Ahmed Makarfi
This revalidation by the apex court last Friday, the legal counsel explained, has invalidated the judgment of Justice Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos, in 2016, which recognized Dayo led exco as the authentic in Ogun State.
He explained further that the ex parte motion Bayo Dayo exco got against the PDP, was hurriedly granted, having ruled out appearance of the then PDP counsel.
“The Supreme Court has since decided that the Senator Makarfi -led National Caretaker Committee is the authentic exco with power to appoint counsel to represent it in matters..
“Please recall that the Supreme Court had earlier given similar judgement in PDP vs Sheriff on the subject, wherein the suit was listed as one of the several suits pending on PDP leadership tussle then”. He stated.
Oke, also pointed out that out of five respondents, only INEC (3rd respondent) is standing, as Bayo Dayo and Semiu Sodipo) 1st and 2nd respondents, have been expelled from PDP, while the 4th respondent, Ali Modu Sheriff, is now in APC.
Oke, therefore, expressed his confidence that the Supreme Court judgement, which will soon be delivered on the matter, will favour Ogundele, urging INEC not to accept any list except by Ogundele led executives.
