The sun has literarily set for Alhaji AbdulRahman Alao Adewole, fondly called “Onilu-Ola” by his admirers.
The family of the 97 year old lead drummer to the late Apala maestro announced his demise in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.
Announcing the death of the famous drummer on Tuesday night, son of the iconic drummer, Kamil Adewole, said his father died at about 10pm at 97 years after a brief, but old age-related illness.
Adewole Alao Onilu-Ola and Waidi Ayinla Omowura, popularly referred to as Egungunmaji, Alhaji Costly, Anigilaje, among other aliases, ruled the Apala music genre in the country and beyond, between 1970 and 1980.
The duo of Ayinla Omowura and Adewole Onilu-Ola were reported to have jointly established the Egba-based Apala Music Band in the ’60s.
However, the fame of the band was cut short when the leader of the band, Ayinla Omowura died on May 6, 1980 after a pub house brawl between him and his late band manager, Fata Baiyewunmi at Idi-Oparun, Ago Ika area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
